Sustainable raw materials for the Turkish coating industry

For more than 25 years, Worlée-Chemie GmbH has been active in the Turkish market. What once began with 25 kilograms of coating additives has developed into an important business area for today’s Worlée.

Some things just need time to grow, particularly when it comes to industry and the economy. When Worlée-Chemie GmbH entered the Turkish market for coating products in 1991, very little was known about the specific needs of the industry in that country. With “Kar Kimya San. ve.Tic.Ltd. Sti.”, the northern German company was able to successfully locate a reliable trade partner directly in Istanbul. As a first transaction, 25 kilograms of the coating additive WorléeAdd 311 were delivered to Turkey for a commission of what was then just 49 German marks.

Since then, many years have gone by. According to “Germany Trade and Invest”, domestic turnover in 2014 for the Turkish chemical market measured 44.8 billion euros, with the trend pointing upwards*. Today, the majority of the binders and additives in Worlée’s product portfolio are also available to customers in Turkey, which in the meantime has become one of the family company’s most important markets outside of Europe.

Along with high-tech products, another trend has become readily apparent: sustainable products made from renewable raw materials. Worlée’s R&D department has already been carrying out research on new solutions for years and, over time, has brought numerous innovative binders and additives to the market. Water-based alkyd emulsions such as the WorléeSol E-Series have already established themselves in the industry thanks to their high-quality ingredients. New developments such as WorléeSol VGT 8709 or the solvent-free alkyd resin WorléeKyd RL 1290 are composed of up to 97 percent renewable raw materials and demonstrate everything that has now become possible. “Only the future can tell whether high-end products compatible with sustainability considerations are actually feasible for the Turkish market. However, we see great potential here at this time and hope that we can further establish ourselves with our environmentally-friendly products.” says Wondu Nuru, Export Manager for Worlée-Chemie GmbH in Lauenburg.

Any company that wants to attract the attention of the Turkish coating industry can hardly stay away from the country’s main exhibition – as such, from 24 to 26 March, Worlée will present a colorful cross section of its product range at Paintistanbul & Turkcoat with experts from Germany and Turkey on hand (booth D221). Along with products featuring renewable raw materials, the focus will be on high-end raw materials for industrial coatings as well as for the decorative field.
What once began with 25 kilograms of coating additives has developed into an important business area for today’s Worlée with a clear path to future development.
