The family company Worlée has been active in the international raw materials market for more than 160 years. We have seen economic crises come and go and survived difficult times together with our customers as well as with our partners. These times have borne witness to mass unemployment and money that was no longer worth any more than paper upon which it was printed. We have seen the times when the whole city lay in ruins, including our trading house in its location close to the Speicherstadt warehouse district of Hamburg.
Some of these times demanded great courage, commitment and risk acceptance on the part of the founding family. Worlée made investments in areas that at first glance seemed to have low profit potential – while it also occasionally took a step back in order to get a clear view of the big picture. Sustainable development was always more important than short-term profits. Emil Heinrich Worlée knew this during the first years of the company’s existence, and Albrecht von Eben-Worlée knew it as well during the postwar era. Responsibility for the company’s numerous employees was taken seriously, and this is still very much the case in today’s company.
The company as a role model
Meanwhile, the Internet age has arrived. Distances are shrinking and business dealings are taking place in even the most remote regions of the globe. Responsibility grows with every click of the mouse, particularly for international companies. Reflecting our position as a role model, we have made central concerns out of issues such as environmental protection and equal opportunities. Whether supporting schools in Egypt or transferring technology to Sri Lanka, Worlée takes its responsibilities very seriously, purposefully forging ahead with its national and international sustainability projects. In our German factories, energy efficiency and resource conservation are of primary importance, and this has been recognized with many awards and distinctions.
Values instead of visions
Of course, the Hamburg company does not just have responsibilities with respect to its employees and nature, but also, of course, to its customers and suppliers in particular. With high supply reliability and risk minimization, it is possible for us to have the right products at the right time in our warehouse. We seek custom solutions and we are never content until our customers are satisfied as well. A statement on our vision of “where we see ourselves in ten years” would seem to be appropriate here. However, the past has shown us that such a prognosis is an extremely difficult matter. It takes away the flexibility that we need for a prompt reaction to current world events. Though we shall not make any statements about the future at this time, we do wish to state the following: with endurance, courage, and long-term vision, Worlée has grown in the last 160 years from a small north German trading company to a provider of raw materials for the chemical, cosmetic and food industries with a distinguished worldwide reputation. These values and characteristics have always served our employees, suppliers and customers well in the past – and this is how we shall continue into the future.
